I got involved with Web Standards and Accessibility back in January this year. Been reading up and doing research practically everyday till now. The process is no doubt a tedious one especially with the lack of sleep but worth every single second of it.
I could never revert back to my old ways of web implementation after gaining these valuable knowledge. There are still many things I have yet to discover and there are heaps of rooms for improvements.
How I envy those of you who live in Australia and USA as many of the web developers are very enthusiastic in working with Web Standards. Somehow or rather, Web Developers in Singapore gave me the impression that they are either not keen or too busy to pick up this knowledge. Maybe they do not think that it is important?
Just the other day, I got turned down by a fellow web developer in forming a local Web Standards Interest Group. Reason given was, “Too busy and too many projects to be done with!” No doubt that is a valid reason but that is the life of a Web Developer and one should get used to it by not neglecting the fact that one should also keep up with time and technology. The worst reason which I hate to hear is, “I am a Web Designer not a Programmer.” If a Web Designer could think this way, I think it is time for them to switch profession and become a Graphic Designer instead. They totally miss the point!
But that did not deter me from thickening my skin and ask others. One friend finally got interested in this because he was called upon to do a project that have the fellow requirements:
- XHTML 1.0 Strict DTD
- Full CSS layout
- Proper taggings
- Must comply to Priority 1 and 2. Priority 3 is secondary.
He used to disregard me when I kept telling him about the importance of Web Standards and Accessibity and the beauty of CSS. But now…he is interested!
Projects like this may be rare now because many company has yet to discover this and especially when many local Web Developers are clueless themselves. But things will change soon.

I totally comprehend with that but the reason in taking up web designing during your spare time is because you enjoy it? Tiring as it is for working non-stop but enjoying what you do is extremely important :)

Hey at least you start off from the right path! Many of us start of using tables for layout and kicking that bad habit in order to do things the right way was a nightmare in the beginning :) You are right about clients’ not giving a hoot about how you build the site but things will change in future when clients are more educated. I believe that self-satisfaction is important as well. Just by knowing that you put in effort to create something puts a smile on your face :) At least that is how I feel.

You could start off by joining WSG Discussion List. Don’t worry about time commitment. Having a local group is not meant to add stress or burden but it is meant to help each other grow (with their knowledge) and to treat it as a form of enjoyment.
There are very few Singaporeans in WSG at the moment. Only three including me. One other joined recently when I recommended it to her. Once there are more Singaporeans, Russ and Peter from WSG will be able to guide us in setting up a local WSG group.

I got to know of your site through Chu Yeow.
Do not be discouraged that local designers lack enthusiasm. By nature, most Singaporeans LACK ENTHUSIASM ABOUT ANYTHING!
I support web standards not because I think it is super essential. Rather, i think it is more important that as long as IE does not have 100% market share, it would do users more harm to have a non-standard.
I am not a designer, but an investor who has had a lifelong passion for technology.
I suggest that the most effective way to get more designers interested in standards is to tell them why it would benefit their net worth if they know it.
In all likelihood, many designers and users employ the ‘as long as it works’ mantra to web pages.
I feel that this web standards activism that you and Chu Yeow have is highly admirable in spirit, and I wish that people will take it seriously.
So i hope you will figure out a way to tell them what’s in it for them to adhere to web standards. In Singapore, money talks loudest. (sadly)

Money Talks…very true ;) Not wanting to rant about Singapore but it seems that doing stuff out of passion or pure pleasure is getting rarer than ever. Maybe it is the lifestyle or maybe it is due to workload. Makes life kind of meaningless in my opinion.
I am glad that your drive behind technology is your passion. It keeps you going because you love it and not because it is your job. Makes everything more meaningful this way.

I am a web designer at night.
and i can tell you that i am too busy to participate in the local web standards community though i am interested.
i have been practising it for about a year, and have built all my clients’ websites using xhtml css altough they don’t care about it. The reason I do so is because I only know how to build website with xhtml css.
I have 24 hours a day, I sell 8 hours to my boss (plus lunch time and travelling time, 12 hours), at night I do my freelance projects, go to bed around 2am. Weekends are the most valuable time for freelance projects. I can’t even find extra time doing experiment with css or learning other web technology. The only time that I am learning something is when I am building my clients’ websites.
This is the life of a poor local web designer.
Do you want me to involve actively in the local community?
